Sat 17th September v Auckland, Shadbolt Park
Harbour 18 Auckland 32, HT Score 10-10
Point Scorers: S Mortenson, A Engelbrecht Tries, D Wallis 1 Con, 1 Pen, S McCann 1 Pen
This was Harbour’s last game and a 5 Point advantage over Auckland in the points race to winning the Baa Baas Cup .
Winter was back with rain and wind at Shadbolt Park. Both Teams in the first 40 ran it from all over the park and Harbour with the tail wind decided to run it. Auckland scored two tries in the space of 20mins just through some average defence which looked costly in the first 40. A try to Albertus Engelbrecht and a Daniel Wallis penalty and Harbour got their tails up. With 2 mins remaining before the break Daniel Wallis added a penalty to make it 10 all.
The second 40 saw the ball in hand and spreading it wide but Auckland’s defence was solid – however a moment of madness from the Aucks through back chat with the Ref resulted in a penalty to Shaun McCann to take Harbour out to a 13 - 10 lead. Auckland replied by putting the ball in the corners and started to feed of Harbour mistakes and sure enough they started to run riot . Within 10 mins Auckland scored two very good tries. Harbour never gave up they managed a set move up the field with all the forwards and backs combining well and a raging bull run by Player of the Day Shaun Mortenson lead to a try and that’s where it ended Auckland 32 – Harbour 18.
Thank you to all the Harbour Supporters that fronted up in the rain and special mentions to our Sponsors ‘North Shore Waterproofing, Triton Clothing , Montys Promotions , Husqvarna NZ, Speakers Corner in Browns Bay, and to Harbour Rugby for all the work you guys do behind the scenes, much appreciated .
Sat 10th September v Thames Valley Dev, Paeroa
Harbour 32 Thames 22
Point Scorers: Jeremy Clark, Mitch Tongalea, Rory Pole Tries, Albertus Engelbrecht 2 Tries, 1 Penalty, Shaun McCann 2 Conversions.
Awesome day for running rugby , the sun was out and a day for shorts and t shirts. A much improved Valley side with a lot of youth took Harbour on with a nice little crowd that fronted up at Paeroa Domain. The first half saw 4 tries with both teams dotting down twice and a conversion and the penalty was the difference at half time.
Harbour tries came from Jeremy Clark and Mitch Tongalea with Shaun McCann's penalty to lead the Valley at the break . Thames had picked players that could score tries and Harbour had to compose themselves and show some patience in the second 40.
Harbour didn’t have it all their own way but managed a 60min try from Albertus Engelbrecht to put our boys out to a 8 point lead with Shaun McCann's conversion. Valley kicked off high into the sun and a fumble from Harbour became very costly as they scored right under the sticks and added the extras. 20 – 19 with 20mins to go and a tail wind this game was going down to the wire.
Harbour kicked off short took the ball and the forwards slowly moved up the field, a quick sprint down the side line is where Rory Pole managed to sneak a try in with Shaun McCann adding a very important kick to stretch the lead out to 8 points again.
Both teams started to use their bench and at one stage Harbour had 14 players on the field as there were no more subs. The Ref issued a penalty to the Valley where they opted for a kick at goal and were successful - this games any ones. Score 27 – 22 to Harbour with 5 mins to go and Harbour on their line tackle after tackle. A brain explosion from the Valley mid field saw a big pass right into Harbour hands - some 90 mtrs the whole team spun it wide to the Gazelle ‘Albertus ‘ you beauty right down the side line back into the field and back down the side line TRY! A Jubilant Harbour got home with a victory 32 – 22. We will take it.
Sat 3rd September v Auckland, Freyberg Park
Harbour 8 Auckland 26, HT Score 5-14
Point Scorers: Albertus Engelbrecht 1 Try, Shaun McCann 1 Pen
This was the Battle of the Bridge/Challenge Cup which has now been going since 2001. Harbour have won on two previous occasions with Auckland having 8 wins. The 10 year anniversary was enough to motivate the Harbour Boys and they started well with an intercept by the 'Shore Flyer' Rory Pole and an inside pass to Albertus Engelbrecht who crossed for the try in the corner. Auckland hit back capitalising on some Harbour mistakes with two tries in the space of 20 minutes to take a 14-5 lead at halftime. The second half saw Harbour plugging the corners but some missed tackles proved costly and Auckland ran in two more tries the end the day with a 26-8 win.
Sat 27th August v Waikato, Morrinsville
Harbour 27 Waikato 16 (HT score 8-13)
Point Scorers: Mitch Tongalea 2, Albertus Engelbrecht, Ben Whitley Tries, Shaun McCann 2 Con, James Hopkins 1 Pen. Harbour had 11 new caps wearing the 85's representative jersey for this match - the motivational DVD (Hangover 2) on the bus heading down must have done wonders! Waikato started well into a head wind, a good try to their halfback resulted in first points. Harbour responded with a Hopkins penalty to get themselves in the game. The game continued with good running from both ends of the field until the Referee caught the Harbour backs off side twice in the space of 10 mins which allowed Waikato to stretch out to a 13-3 lead. Just before half time Harbour backs took their chance from 50m out and had a go with Mitch Tongalea scoring a nice try down the side line. Another penalty to Waikato in the second half resulted in a handy 16-8 lead. Harbour hit back with another try to Mitch Tongalea with Shaun McCann adding the extra 2 points to bring Harbour within 1 point with 8 minutes to go. The Harbour backs used the width of the field and a inside pass to Albertus Engelbrecht resulted in a try, and for the first time in the game the lead to Harbour 20-16. Harbour forwards with still more petrol in the tank drove the ball some 60m up field and the backs showed their class once again with Ben Whitley scoring a brilliant try to seal the win.
