Harbour 15 - Auckland 18, HT score 10-3.
Point Scorers: R Pole Try, J Kaisuva Try 1 Pen, D Wallis 1 Con.
The final game of the year for the Harbour 85’s was ‘The Battle of the Bridge’ (also known as the Challenge Cup).
Harbour got off to a great start when just 5 minutes into the game Rory Pole cruised in for an intercept try off a wayward pass from the Auckland 5/8. Daniel Wallis added the extras. With the wind at Harbour’s back they tried running it from their own 22 which became a problem due to some sloppy passing. A penalty to Harbour followed by one to Auckland right on half time saw Harbour with a 10-3 lead going into the break.
Auckland were confident going into the second half with the wind and used it to full advantage, plugging the corners and just waiting for a Harbour mistake. 10 minutes in and Auckland went over in the right hand corner through a very easy push over try to make it 10-8. A penalty to Auckland then gave them an 11-10 lead. A further converted try pushed the score out to 18-10 but Harbour didn’t let up and a try to Johnny Kaisuva closed the gap. Unfortunately that was how the score stayed, an 18-15 win to Auckland.
A big thank you to all our supporters that traveled with us this season, enjoy your summer and a special thank you to Speakers Corner in Browns Bay.

DAY 1
First game against Auckland was very important. Both teams ran hard for the whole 40 mins but experience got Auckland in front 9-3 with Daniel Wallis kicking our penalty for a very valuable bonus point. That bonus point was the first in two years since this Tournament had started.
2nd game v Thames Valley - different conditions, rain and a massive tail wind. Harbour played dry rugby in the wet with our try being scored by Andy Mai, the Development team captain, Daniel Wallis added the 2 penalties for the 11 nil win.
At the end of the first days play - Auckland were on 8 points, Harbour 5, Waikato 4 and Thames Valley 1.
DAY 2
First game against Waikato. This game was about pressure, forwards and backs playing the Barbarian way – attack, attack and have a crack from anywhere and show the flair of rugby we all know about. Half time score 3 all with our points coming from a Daniel Wallis penalty. The last 20 minutes was pressure rugby and only in the last 5 minutes did the game start to take shape. Waikato were awarded a penalty some 35 metres out in front and the mooloo's were out in front 6-3 and had the tail wind. The Waikato backs were caught off side and PC (Paul Craig) kicked the penalty to level at 6 all.
THE GRAND FINAL
Harbour led 6-0 early on and just before half time young Daniel Wallis some 50mtrs out added a drop kick giving us a very handy 9 nil lead. Auckland replied with a penalty and at half time Harbour were leading 9 - 3.
With 2 minutes left in the game Auckland scored a converted try which took the score out to 10-9 to Auckland which was the final score.
v Thames Valley, 4.9.10
Harbour 26-17, HT score 21-7.
Point Scorers: A Engelbrecht, A Mai, J Clark Tries, D Wallis 1 Try, 3 Con.
The final outing for these boys as they had one last chance to show their skills against a much improved Thames Valley side on a sunny day at Windsor park. A lot was at stake as the coaches where adding their final touches for the NZ Barbarians 20/20 Rugby Tournament next weekend at College Rifles. Both Harbour teams were on trial and the Development were up against Auckland at 2.45pm as the main game. The Coaches had told the players what was required but also see how many points you can score in 40mins - at half time the Harbour boys were out to 21-7 lead .
From both games the coaches put together the Tournament Team and in this team 10 Development players are included .The Development Team had a good lesson against a very strong Auckland side who went on to win 51-5 with the Harbour try scored by 'the Preacher' Mr Steve Boardman. Any way readers not letting to much out of the bag but should be an interesting Tournament.
The Tournament begins Sept 11 with Harbour playing Auckland at 11am , then Thames Valley at 4pm. Sept 12 - Harbour play Waikato at 10.30am
Where - at The College Rifles RFC - Haast St , Remuera.
Good Luck to all players and come along supporters.
v Waikato Harlequins, 28.810
Harbour 16 Waikato 20, HT score 16-7.
Point Scorers: Albertus Engelbrecht Try, Daniel Wallis 1 Con, 3 Pen. Player of the Day: Shaun Mortensen
The Predator Cup was up for grabs, this match has been going since 2005, Harbour have been the holders to this day but the mooloo men came to town with a plan.
The young Ref from Auckland laid the law down from the start and any fringing around the ruck or slowing the ball down would be yellow carded. The match got underway and a titanic struggle it was - both teams running hard at each other and making big tackles. Harbour managed to sneak 2 penalties in when both the Waikato Hooker and Prop had been yellow carded and the game started to open up. Waikato then applied pressure around the Harbour mid field with pick and go's, shortees off the rucks and started to play pattern rugby and very accurate it was, some thing that most Prem players do week in week out. A lapse of concentration by Harbour meant the mooloo men crossed the white paint and a conversion to lead 7-6. Harbour's kick off high into the sun and a knock on gave us a little sniff - and a sniff it was , a scrum and a little charge then the backs had a crack down the left hand side when Albertus 'the Barbarian' ran some 35 mtrs to touch down and with the try converted a lead of 13 points into a head win - not a bad effort. Waikato came straight back at Harbour so Harbour started to counter attack back in their face with shortees, two passes off the ruck , stretching the Waikato mid field right across the park untill some bad advice from Waikato players to the Ref gave Harbour another penalty and that sealed the first half 16-7.
A tail wind and a 9 point advantage became a night mare, Waikato changed gear into 5th and started to dictate the game, pressure, discipline, running hards at holes, our boys weren't ready for the next chapter, penalty after penalty and 6 extra points became 'hope we can old them out' , the Waikato forwards just kept coming and they certainly know how to win when their tails are up. A try just left of the post and the conversion was the telling story of the how the Predator Cup went south.
Both forward packs hammered each other for 80mins -the backs from both sides were on a mission but those who witnessed this game had a great insight to U85kg Rugby. I don't know who was more stuffed the supporters or the players.
Congratulations Waikato Harlequins
v Thames Valley, 21.810
Harbour 20 Thames Valley 10, HT score 8-0.
Point Scorers: Albertus Engelbrecht, Andy Mai Tries Daniel Wallis 1 Try, 1 Con, 1 Pen.
Wet weather during the week and the floods in Te Aroha made Thames Valley 2nd XV the favourites for this match 'Big Forwards v U85kg lads and a level playing field. Over the years with the annual pre season match with hard grounds the games flowed nicely , this was a totally different game.
The Valley hammered Harbours line for 12 mins but just couldn't get over, then a late charge on our number 10 and the penalty kick for touch opened the game up . A Penalty to Harbour with some back chat from the Valley become costly as Daniel Wallis 3 pts gave a little cushion and that started the ball rolling.
The Weight of the Harbour Forwards weighing in at 660kgs and the Valley forwards 800 kgs plus the little fellas and the Technique we use at trainings to roll the bigger teams became our weapon. Harbour started to roll their pack with 30/40 mtr runs up field and the crowd from the Valley became quite noisey probably in disbelief
The Charging bull runs by the Harbour pack gave a great wingers try down the side line and around there winger to Albertus Engelbrecht with Harbour going into half time 8 points to nil. Still anyones game and the bonus of a tail wind became the telling factor of this match. Harbour Captain-Andy Mai of the side of the scrum linking with the Backs and Player of the Day DJ Pike ran riot again down the left hand side of the field with a spectacular team try that 9 players had a touch to with interpassing and 5 points to be out to a handy lead.
The Valley came back to score two very easy tries as a result of clearing the bench and 10mins from time young Daniel Wallis intercepted a pass from the Valley to score under the sticks and that’s where the game ended. The Coaches made 9 changes from last weeks game against the Development and great to see alot of the young guns of our grade coming through to wear the A Team Jersey .
