Massey have taken the first round honours, but the spotlight fell on Mahurangi's veteran loose forward/lock Haden Kose who brought up his 200th premier game for the Warkworth club and toasted the occasion with a try and their first victory of 2015.
Mahurangi travelled to Marist and came away with a hard-earned 20-15 win. Kose made his premier debut in 1997 and has played for North Harbour at schools and age grade levels.
North Shore continued their solid recent form by roaring back from a 19-0 deficit to beat the Western Pioneers 27-25. The youngsters in the pack, No 8 Dillon Wihongi and tighthead prop Sione Mafileo, stepped up after flanker Josh Blucher was lost, concussed just after the kickoff. Two penalty tries from scrums were decisive as the packs tried to grind each down at Vauxhall Road. Kauri Mackie scored the sole individual try for Shore, while Willie Walker's boot did the rest. David Bason and Kyle Nu'uali'itia were among the tryscorers for Western. Both teams finish with a 7-2 record.
Massey secured the Buck Shelford Shield with a 3-3 stalemate at Moire Park against Takapuna, Nalu Tuigamala and Jon Elrick with one penalty goal apiece.
East Coast Bays were comfortably ensconced in fifth place after beating Northcote 27-10 at the Harvey Wright Fields.
Rep players Jona Tuitoga and Irwin Finau were among Bays' tryscorers. Northcote, coached by 1997 Bays' premier coach Bob Telfer, finish seventh on the log.
Glenfield retained the Les Pearce Memorial Shield with a 12-5 win over Silverdale, who take the eighth and last spot for the second round, which kicks off next Saturday. Bonus points will be available for this round.
