The Premier 2 grade played their semi-finals 29 July and decided the teams for Premier 2 Finals in the Championship, Plate and Bowl finals scheduled for this Saturday 5 August at the top seed club. Northcote defeated 4th qualifier Massey very comfortably remaining unbeaten in 2017 to host the Championship final at Harvey Wright Fields. The young Kumeu side spawned from the Champion U21 side of 2016 put away North Shore at Vauxhall 33-20 to face Northcote which will be a thriller and a great contest but the old dogs should lift the trophy. In the Plate semi-finals East Coast Bays were too good for Silverdale at Windsor Park winning 37-17 and Takapuna edged Navy 22-15 at Onewa Domain. The Plate Final is at Windsor Park with East Coast Bays hosting Takapuna in what will be a tight fixture with only 2 competition points separating them in the competition rounds. In the Bowl semi-final Marist on their home patch, accounted for Glenfield 46-31 in a high scoring encounter and will face Helensville at the ‘Ville for the Bowl Final. Helensville back in the Premier grades after several years will be looking to take the silverware in front of their home crowd and kick on in 2018. All games are at 1pm.
The U85 results for 29 July included three passionate local derby’s with bottom placed Helensville in their last game of the season giving an injury depleted top dog Kumeu a fright holding them to a 27-22 result. Silverdale picked up a 29-7 bonus point win over neighbours Mahurangi up at Warkworth to secure second place and Northcote just edged Takapuna by the narrowest of margins winning 11-10 to push their old rivals into the Plate semi’s and qualifying in 3rd place. East Coast Bays put away North Shore 45-21 at Windsor with 10 tries across the game and will host the Devonport crew again in a Plate Semi-final at home. Massey had the bye but have done enough in previous games to qualify for a Championship semi-final.
Kumeu remain at the top of the table on 61 points going into semi-finals, Silverdale are on 60 with Northcote on 59 and Massey are on 45 as is Takapuna but winning the second round game between the two clubs, ranks Massey in 4th place. Kumeu should beat Massey in the first semi-final having comfortably won the two round-robin games but the Westies could get up for it. Silverdale continued their dominance and finishing second to host the other Championship semi-final over the well performed Northcote which will be a cracker up at the ‘Dale with maybe home advantage carrying the day. Takapuna should take their Plate semi-final over Mahurangi and likewise Bays over Shore in the other Plate semi. The semi-finals will be all played at 2.45pm on Saturday 5 August at the first named club as follows:
Championship Semi-finals – Kumeu v Massey and, Silverdale v Northcote
Plate Semi-finals – Takapuna v Mahurangi and, East Coast Bays v North Shore
The Championship and Plate Finals will be held Saturday 12 August at the top seed club.
